The Linn County Board of Supervisors is hosting an Expungement and Employment Barriers Resource Clinic on Saturday, July 27, 2019, in Cedar Rapids for Linn County residents. The County is working with Iowa Legal Aid and other local agencies to provide this service. The purpose of the clinic is to help people involved with the criminal justice system overcome barriers to housing, employment and education.

Application and appointment are required to participate. Complete the application online or call Iowa Legal Aid at 515-243-1193 ext. 1632. The deadline to apply is July 19 at 5 p.m.

Once an application is submitted, Iowa Legal Aid will determine if the case and client can be helped. Eligible clients will receive legal assistance for issues related to expungement, court debt, drivers’ licenses and vehicle registration issues.

In addition to legal assistance, eligible clients can receive information on obtaining housing, employment, financial planning, voting rights, and other related topics.

The clinic will be held at the Linn County Community Services Building at 1240 26th Avenue Court SW. Transportation is available and will be scheduled as needed during the appointment process.

“This clinic will be an incredible asset to the community,” said Linn County Supervisor Stacey Walker. “We will help residents improve their own lives, remove barriers to employment and allow people to fully participate in society. This, in turn, helps our local economy by providing employers with access to individuals who are ready and willing to work. Our goal is to help end the cycle of unemployment and homelessness.”

This effort is spearheaded by Supervisor Walker and stems from recommendations of the Safe, Equitable, and Thriving Communities Task Force report. This is the second year Linn County has hosted the Expungement and Employment Barriers Resource Clinic. Last year, more than 100 people attended the clinic, making it the largest expungement clinic ever in the state of Iowa.
